The KGLRC is selling Wenke Bucks again this year in advance of Kalamazoo Pride 2012. They are $10, and each “Buck” is worth $10 at Wenke Greenhouses at the corner of Market and Sprinkle Road. 20% of each Buck sold goes right to Kalamazoo Pride… let’s sell out of these like we did last year!

Terry Kuseske LGBT Youth Scholarship

The Terry Kuseske LGBT Youth Scholarship has been established for the purpose of awarding an annual scholarship to a southwest Michigan LGBTA graduating senior who plans to attend college in the state of Michigan in the fall following their graduation. This is a wonderful opportunity because there are very few LGBTA specific scholarships available to young people.

In order to be considered for the scholarship, the student must submit the following by May 18, 2012. The scholarship winner will be notified by June 4, 2012 and will be officially recognized at the Kalamazoo Pride on June 9, 2012. Applications should be submitted to tracy@kgrlc.org or delivered to 629 Pioneer St., Kalamazoo, MI 49008.

Wine, Cheese & Chatter – March 31

All are invited to join the Kalamazoo Gay Lesbian Resource Center for wine, cheese and chatter on Saturday, March 31. Stop by between 7 and 10 to meet staff, volunteers and socialize with the LGBT and Ally community. The KGLRC is pleased to offer this event free of charge, but we wouldn’t turn away any Lincoln’s or Jackson’s if you feel inclined to make a donation while you’re sipping the vino.

Discussion and Workshop: Bible texts and care-filled sex

A significant partner of the Kalamazoo Gay Lesbian Resource Center, Volunteer Kalamazoo has been the center for volunteerism in Kalamazoo since 1965. It is a member of Volunteer Centers of Michigan and an affiliate of the HandsOn Network. The KGLRC’s Executive Director, Zachary Bauer, has been asked to be a host, along with other community leaders. Please join him for a great night to help support an amazing community partner.

It Takes a Village, Donate to the Resource Center Youth

The Resource Center Youth Group helps young people, ages up to 18, who are trying to come to terms with their sexuality and gender identity in a sometimes unaccepting society.

Friendship, acceptance, and access to accurate information and potential resources can be of immense help to a young person. We seek to provide such help through information, referral, sharing, and regular get-togethers. Our Youth Group meetings are an opportunity to meet and share with other gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, questioning, or allied teens in a safe environment. We strive to provide activities which meet the needs and interests of everyone involved in the group.

Senate Bill Passed To Ban Domestic Partner Benefits for Unmarried Partners of Public Employees

Today, House Bills 4770 and 4771 passed in the Senate. The bills would ban domestic partner benefits for unmarried partners of public employees. We need to let our voices be heard and let our elected officials know this is not acceptable. Michigan should be concerned with keeping and attracting talented workers and not pushing them away.

Please call Governor Snyder and tell him to veto HB 4770 and HB 4771. It is not too late, so please call Governor Snyder at (517) 373-3400.

Michigan State Senate passed House Bill 4163 Take Action

Today the Michigan State Senate passed House Bill 4163. It was a bittersweet moment – even though the terrible license to bully based on a religious conviction was removed, our State Senate passed a weak bill without any of the protections that would make kids in Michigan safer.

“Directed by the biases of a few, our Senate missed another opportunity to do right by our kids.” –Emily Dievendorf, Director of Policy, Eqaulity Michigan

This bill now moves to Governor Snyder’s desk. Governor Snyder needs to understand that our kids deserve protection, no matter who they are, and it must be taken seriously. Let him know – call his office. Send emails. Write letters. Tell Governor Snyder that we need a bill that requires statewide reporting standards and enumerated targeted characteristics. It is time for our state government to recognize that bullying is a legitimate problem in our state, and one that needs to be rectified. Now.
